THE JAMES GANG
July James Gang
Each month, I interview authors or publishing insiders who have some form of "James" in their names or in their books. My July James Gang interviewee is Evernight Publishing author, London Saint James!
1. Let's get the most important question asked first: Why James?
Well, it all started with London. A friend of mine named her daughter London. I loved the name, and in truth I've always wanted to visit London. It has been on my "places to see list." When I started writing seriously, I thought, Why not use London? Saint James seemed to naturally follow. I scribbled the name across a piece of paper, and there it was the birth of romance writer London Saint James.
2. What fiction genre(s) and/or sub-genre(s) do you write?
I suppose I've generally been classified in the contemporary romance genre, adding in the hint of paranormal with The Heart Of Winter series. I have also written an erotic paranormal short story called "Crimson Sin," which was included in the Midnight Seduction Halloween anthology, an erotic contemporary holiday short story called "The Proposal" that was included in the Stockings & Suspenders Christmas anthology, along with a BDSM story called "Mistake" that was published in the Master of Mine BDSM anthology.
3. Tell us about your latest release.
I just completed Eternal, book 4, and the final book in the 4-part continuing series, The Heart Of Winter.
Romance writer Winter Wells has found her new life with Hollywood Hottie, Cayden Cain, a blessing and a curse. He is the blessing. His career is the curse. Involved in an unprecedented web of strange events and wound in a string of lies about to break with devastating consequences, Winter must battle ghosts from her past that threaten to harm Cayden.
Faced with a choice she always knew would be inevitable, can the fairy tale of their relationship beat out the odds of their reality and really come true?
4. Is there a core story and/or a theme(s) in your books?
I seem to be drawn to deeply brooding people. Those people who don't think much of themselves or their talents, and can't see how truly amazing they are. I like to delve into all the insecurities of a character, especially insecurities that many of us have when it comes to relationships, and take a journey through good times, bad times, and some extraordinary events.
5. Do you have a favorite hero and/or heroine in your books and why?
I loved writing about Winter Perri, the heroine in The Heart Of Winter series. And I will always keep her close to my heart as characters go, but one of my favorites would be a character I'm currently working on named Trinity. I suppose I'm drawn to the flaws or what we perceive as flaws in ourselves, and overcoming the things we want to change. Trinity's character is riddled with flaws, or perceived flaws, along with many fears, but she will find everything she thought was impossible for her, becomes possible. I suppose why I find her my favorite is she's stronger than she ever believed. A modern day ugly duckling that turns into a swan, and somewhere along the way, she finds she has always been the swan; she just needed to spread her wings.
6. What do you enjoy most about being an author?
When someone emails and tells me how much they enjoyed reading something I wrote. I think that is pretty darn awesome.
7. Do you have any awards, reviews or kudos you'd like to tell us about?
I'm happy to say that a couple of the anthologies I've been associated with have become best sellers. I have also had some terrific reviews for The Heart Of Winter series and was recently featured in the "Hooked On A Series" column in the WildFire newsletter for All Romance eBooks.
8. How do you promote your books and your author brand?
I am part of all the social networks, Facebook, MySpace, Twitter, Google, Goodreads… I do interviews, giveaways, and participate in things like blog hops and/or other promotional web-based things. I also advertise on a few different websites.
9. What is your next project?
I'm working on a few things. I'm focusing on an erotic novel called La Bonne Soeur, which is French for "The Good Sister." The inspiration for this book came from a quote. "We always long for the forbidden things, and desire what is denied us." -- Francois Rabelais. I have a sci-fi series I'm working on with another author and a naughty fairy tale in the works. I have more characters and stories running around in my head than perhaps the average person. LOL. But I'm hoping to have the erotic contemporary novel completed and submitted in the next few weeks.
10. Do you have a bit of wisdom you'd like to impart or a favorite quote?
Wisdom? Well, perhaps for the aspiring writer. Here it goes: Write what you love. What you find inspiring. Read as much as you can. Find someone wonderful to bounce ideas off of. Grow a thick skin and don't let negativity get you down. Keep yourself in your work and keep on writing.
Favorite quote? Here's one of my favorites: "I love thee to the depth and breadth and height my soul can reach." -- Elizabeth Barrett Browning.
