The James Gang

THE JAMES GANG

September James Gang Interview

Each month, I interview authors or publishing insiders who have some form of "James" in their names or in their books. My September interviewee is Mystery/Thriller author, James Moushon.

1. Let’s get the most important question asked first: Why James?

Real name. I was the first James that we could find in our family tree.

My last name is a different story. My granddaughter recently did an ancestry study tracing our name back to Sigisbert MOUSHON, who was born in 1738 in Fremonville, France. His son, Jean Pierre MOUSHON, who was born in 1782 in Fremonville, France - Dept. of Muerthe, migrated through Canada and landed in Illinois in the early 1800s as a gentleman farmer. Fremonville is in the Alsace-Lorraine area on the France and German border. So I guess I’m French and German.

2. What fiction genre(s) and/or sub-genre(s) do you write?

My genre is Mystery & Thrillers – Espionage. I have no plans to move to another genre.

3. Tell us about your latest release.

Game of Fire

An explosion and fire rocks a Southern California mall, and it is quickly determined it is arson. The timing of the incident is special because it interrupts the Tet New Year’s Festival and Parade in Little Saigon, an area just east of Long Beach.

Had the old wounds of Vietnam been opened again, or was there a different game being played?

Enter veteran CIA Agent Jonathon Stone. Already in pursuit of the gun-running Minh family, he connects with a special FBI task force to assist in the investigation of the explosion, and Minh quickly becomes their number one suspect.

Stone teams up with FBI Agent Jodi Shannon to pursue the people behind the arson fire. Jodi is a serious, no-nonsense agent who leads the FBI Arson Task Force. While she fights to solve the mystery, she also fights Stone’s advances. As always, he tries to mix business with pleasure.

As the game takes its twists and turns, Stone’s assignment leads to a shootout in Las Vegas and a car chase down the coast of Southern California.

Jonathon Stone battles his love for gambling and drinking and the ladies to help solve the mystery of the Game of Fire.

4. Is there a core story and/or a theme(s) in your books?

Jonathon Stone Mystery Series

The leading character is Jonathon Stone, a domestic CIA agent at-large, assigned to the D.O.T. (Domestic Operation – Terrorism) unit of the CIA. They handle domestic terrorism off the books.

5. Do you have a favorite hero and/or heroine in your books and why?

Besides Jonathon Stone, my favorite is Jon’s sidekick, Chuck Chan, a CIA agent from San Francisco who is usually called in to help Jonathon. Jonathon, besides being a top agent, is a gambler, a drinker and a ladies man. Chuck, on the other hand, is a no-nonsense agent who helps Jonathon make it to the end of the day.

6. What do you enjoy most about being an author?

I have a two-part answer. I have dreamed about writing all my life but always work or something else got in my way. Now I get to write in the fictional world of Jonathon Stone and try to lead my readers on a twisting journey.

I love writing my blogs. They recently passed 375,000 views with over 800 articles, interviews and book showcases. They are all focused at helping other authors get that little boost in exposure or providing useful information to help them succeed.

7. Do you have any awards, reviews or kudos you’d like to tell us about?

No awards. Some great reviews. Lots of kudos. Game of Fire reached second on Amazon in the category: Mystery & Thrillers, Espionage during a recent promotion.

8. How do you promote your books and your author brand? Tell us about your blog(s).

9. What is your next project?

I have two projects going on currently besides my daily blogs.

  1. Operation Alpha Dog – a six pack of Mystery short stories with Jonathon Stone as the protagonist. Currently in editing with an estimated release date in September 2015.

The stories take Stone from the desert sands of Palm Beach to the sunny shores of Orange County, California trying to stop terrorism, assassination attempts and espionage.

  1. The Indie Author’s ePlaybook, a non-fiction book which targets new authors and self-published authors trying to succeed in the current publishing industry.

The book starts by discussing the basic decisions an author has to make before they start that journey to become a published author. Also, it includes a discussion of the following topics:

  1. Self-Publishing and needing a helping hand
  2. eBook Information Requirements
  3. Net Presence including a website and social media presence
  4. Marketing including targeting, book launch and strategy
  5. Direct Selling to your audience at festivals, book signings and more
  6. Problems and how to overcome them
  7. Industry Future, looking into a crystal ball
  8. Research and required reading
  9. Resources and building a list

10. Do you have a bit of wisdom you’d like to impart or a favorite quote?

My favorite quote is from Ernest Hemingway’s short story The Snows of Kilimanjaro (1938). He opens the story with an observation about a lone leopard who sought the tip of Kilimanjaro. The story reflects on his life as a writer and draws many parallels to today’s writer, seventy-five years later.

“Kilimanjaro is a snow-covered mountain 19,710 feet high, and is said to be the highest mountain in Africa. Its western summit is called the Masai 'Ngaje Ngai', the House of God. Close to the western summit there is a dried and frozen carcass of a leopard. No one has explained what the leopard was seeking at that altitude.”
