THE JAMES GANG
August James Gang
Each month, I interview authors or publishing insiders who have some form of "James" in their names or in their books. My August James Gang interviewee is Siren Publishing author Elle Saint James.
1. Let's get the most important question asked first: Why James?
I wish I had some elaborate and intriguing tale to tell you about why I chose James. However, it's my husband's first name. That's it. You have it all now. He's been immortalized. Which is a good thing because he is very supportive of my writing career. And I also think he's cute.
2. What fiction genre(s) and/or sub-genre(s) do you write?
So far, I've written western historical as with the "Badland" series and contemporary cowboys with the "Double Rider Men's Club" (DRMC) series. Isn't that a naughty series title? <smile> I love it. And I have several more to write in this series. I'll be busy for some time. Then I may go back and try another historical series. We'll see.
3. Tell us about your latest releases.
Unbridled and Unbroken came out in January of 2011. Here's the blurb:
A forgotten lotto ticket and a strong dose of lust send Veronica after Johnny and into his hotel room. She's introduced to his good friend Adam and their ménage lifestyle, which further intrigues her. But Veronica has a dark secret she dares not share with Johnny or Adam. It forces her to live a lie and worse, threatens their newfound love.
Johnny and Adam consider themselves lucky to have found a woman intrigued by their ménage lifestyle. Even though they weren't looking for a partner, they've found the perfect girl for them. But Veronica is hiding something that has her running out the morning after the Double Rider Men's Club annual event. An old friend associated with their men's club is hell-bent on putting Veronica in jail.
Will Johnny and Adam be able to protect her from Zachary, or will they lose her forever?
I've got Unbridled and Unbound coming next. I don't have the release date, but it will be out before the end of the year. Currently I'm working on the fourth book in the series. My publisher will be very happy to know I'm more than halfway through.
4. Is there a core story and/or a theme(s) in your books?
As these are ménage romances, one of the core story lines is for the two men looking for a woman who shares their interest in exhibition and voyeurism, which is what the Double Rider Men's Club is all about and also wanting to share herself with two men in a permanent relationship.
I didn't start out to do this consciously, but so far my heroines have been at low points in their lives and perhaps a bit more open to what a new and exciting lifestyle such as the DRMC has to offer. I'll see how it goes as the series progresses. I may have a kick-ass chick heroine one of these days.
5. Do you have a favorite hero and/or heroine in your books and why?
I always find it a bit like selecting a favorite child to answer this question, but I will say I have an enduring character in the DRMC series that I adore. His name is Clayton Forrester. Clay will be a part of each and every story until he has his own in the final book of the series. At least that is my intent.
For the Badlands series, I'd have to say my favorite heroine is Miranda Herrington in Two Wanted Men. She was such a fighter in a time when most men didn't appreciate it. I love that about her. The two heroes came along and of course loved her strong qualities. I love to write feisty heroines.
6. What do you enjoy most about being an author?
Great question. I'm all about telling stories. I love exploring the stories in my head. I love sitting down and creating stories that fulfill the happily ever after that we don't always see in real life. I adore creating characters to tell the many stories bouncing around in my head. I love being surprised as I write each story as often they don't turn out as I'd initially expected. <smile> Also typing "the end" is a personal favorite authorly (Is that a word? It should be.) joy that I relish with each book.
7. Do you have any awards, reviews or kudos you'd like to tell us about?
Yes. Unbridled and Undone was a finalist in the Desert Rose RWA Golden Quill contest this year. And just a couple of days ago, Unbridled and Undone also was named a finalist in the Aspen Gold contest. I'm very excited about these.
I don't always read reviews, but Coffee Time Romance has been filled with praise for the first two books in the DRMC series. Both Unbridled and Undone and Unbridled and Unbroken got really great reviews there.
8. How do you promote your books and your author brand?
Mostly I maintain a website and I keep writing more books. <laugh> Until earlier this year, Elle Saint James was the super secret pen name of my other overt pen name, Lara Santiago, (by the way, Santiago also translates to Saint James) so I've only recently promoted openly.
My largest promotion involves putting my books in published contests. I'm a huge contest queen. I enter up to twelve contests a year, sometimes with more than one book. Being a finalist in any contest is a huge bonus in my promotion campaign.
And I only enter ones with a Spicy or Erotic category. With anything else, loops, chats, advertizing in magazines or on-line, there is no guarantee you'll see a sales increase or that anyone will buy and read your books. But I purchase my own print copies and send them in for contests to put my books in the hands of readers who know what I write. I would never press erotic romance on someone who doesn't want to read it. Contests also serve several additional purposes beyond possible finalist status. If a judge likes my book, they may go out and buy more and then tell all their friends about the new fabulous author they've discovered. If they don't like the book, then I'd expect a "book friendly" judge to give my book to someone who might enjoy it. Or they perhaps they will take it to a used book store or even offer it up to Goodwill. In any case, I get a few more chances to reach readers. Being a finalist in any contest is a huge bonus.
9. What is your next project?
I'm currently working on the fourth book in the DRMC series Unbridled and Unridden. There will be quite a few of these books so I need to write faster. <grin> One day I may embark on a completely different genre like Science Fiction, Fantasy or Paranormal just to shake things up a bit. However, for now I'm in love with contemporary cowboys and historical westerns. So keep an eye out for several more DRMC books in the future.
10. Do you have a bit of wisdom you'd like to impart or a favorite quote?
Let's see...wisdom according to Elle...
Don't be afraid to check out what's happening on the wild side as you might enjoy a bit of naughty every once and awhile. And if you read something, anything, that you like, please share with all of your friends. Authors really love that. <big grin>
Thank you so much for having me on your website, Marcia. I've enjoyed it so much.
Thank you, Elle! My September James Gang interviewee will be Brandi Quick, who has a vampire character perfect for the James Gang!
