THE JAMES GANG
Each month I interview an author or publishing insider who has “James” in his/her name. My April James Gang interview is with Freya’s Bower author Ava James.
1. Let’s get the most important question asked first: Why James?
I wanted something simple. Something that was easy to remember and could be seen as sweet or a bit dangerous. I am from Missouri (land of Jesse James), and I just thought “Ava James” had a unique ring to it.
2. What fiction genre(s) and/or sub-genre(s) do you write?
I write whatever genre comes to mind. I like variety, but I devote a great deal of time to research and try to be true to whatever genre I am dabbling in.
3. Tell us about your latest release.
Latest release, Royal Cargo. Who wouldn’t want a piece of a gunslinging pirate from outer space? Princess Priya of Caethern has been kidnapped on her wedding day in an evil plot of court intrigue, and stolen by a pirate with a dark secret. To read more, click here.
4. Is there a core story and/or a theme(s) in your books?
I like to write heroines who are coming into their own. Some are brassy and sassy, ready to rock ‘n roll with the boys; while others are just discovering their inner strengths and confidences. Since I am a genre whore; there is not one presenting time or specific theme that reoccurs. All I can say is that when I write love, it’s for keeps. I believe in the power of that first glance, that initial attraction, and love at first bite, opps--I mean sight.
5. Do you have a favorite hero and/or heroine in your books and why?
Hard Question. I love Llaw in The Eagle At Midnight. Think David Beckham, but with better teeth, as an ancient Celtic God damned in the love life department. Read more about it here.
6. What do you enjoy most about being an author?
I love to tell stories, to create new and exciting relationships. So what if the hero has a vicious goddess for a mother, your new lover happens to have claws, or is an officer of the law with a deliciously devious streak a mile wide--no one is perfect. The fun of it is figuring out how you will make it work!
7. Do you have any awards, reviews or kudos you’d like to tell us about?
My favorite reader comment for The Eagle At Midnight: “I loved this book! Where do I begin? The chemistry between Deryn and Llaw is intense and HOT. The whole book sweeps you off your feet, and before you know it, you’re sucked into another world. I am very much hoping for a sequel because the story was over way too soon! I loved this book and can’t wait to read more from Ava James. Brava!!”
8. How do you promote your books and your author brand?
I am everywhere! I am a Dark Diva Reviewer and Co-Moderator of a fabulous group called Castle In The Sky, have a blog at http://www.avajamesromance.blogspot.com/ and a website http://avajames.weebly.com .
9. What is your next project?
A western set in 1899 Alaska. Yes, it is a far stretch from my other works. I also have a series of law enforcement contemporary romances that I am negotiating with a publisher right now. I never have nothing going on! I swear, I am one of those kids in grade school, that instead of taking good notes, was doodling in the margins and thinking of what I could do next!
10. Do you have a bit of wisdom you'd like to impart or a favorite quote?
"I learned this, at least, by experiment; that if one advances confidently in the direction of his dreams, and endeavors to live the life which is imagined, he will meet with a success unexpected in common hours... If you have built castles in the air, your work need not be lost; this is where they should be. Now put the foundation under them.” ~ Henry David Thoreau
I am building my castle right now, and laying that foundation brick by brick.
Thanks, Ava! Next month I’ll interview Cobblestone Press author Lyric James!
