The James Gang

THE JAMES GANG

January James Gang Interview

Each month, I interview authors or publishing insiders who have some form of "James" in their names or in their books. My January interviewee is author Adam Mann, who has a character perfect for the James Gang!

1. Why did you pick the name James for your hero in Dreaming?

As I was writing, I chose the name of my lovely heroine first – Ioana – who is Canadian but whose parents are from Romania. I juggled with several names until I came to think about James, which I decided was ideal.

2. What fiction genres do you write and under what pen names?

My books are all strictly Fiction and Romance, with explicit sex scenes, and I write under the pen name, Adam Mann. I also write historical novels and a thriller under my own name, Mike Lord.

3. Tell us about Dreaming?

I was working in Sri Lanka several years ago and travelled to Batticoloa during an interlude in the Sri Lanka war, which lasted intermittently for over 20 years. I began to image the restoration, which would be needed now that the war has been terminated, and the problems that would arise, and for some reason based the romance there, as both the hero and the heroine were working there.

4. Is there a core story or a theme in your books?

Yes, definitely. I always aim for a HEA [Happily Ever After] ending, but of course there are problems and complications along the way that will be incurred by both the hero and the heroine. An example of this is my romance, The Showers.

Here is the blurb for The Showers...

Take a pony-trekking holiday in the West Yorkshire Dales. Bill did just that riding a Fell Pony and got more than he bargained for when he stayed at a farmhouse with a group of guests, and the farmer’s wife strays into his shower! The romance is complicated by the lady’s teenage daughter and her former husband who suddenly turns up, and their discovery that local society can be more than a bit spiteful at times. All good romances have a happy ending, so get out your box of tissues!

5. Do you have a favorite hero or heroine in your books and why?

Yes, I wrote a book, Body Heat, which is based in a remote part of northeast Thailand and loosely written around the TV series Naked and Afraid, which has made several viewers cross at the extreme personal egos of the individuals participating, and the TV crew that accompanied each episode – so they weren’t alone by any means. In my books, they are completely alone and have no TV crew, but with their relaxed egos they could fall in love.

6. What do you enjoy most about being an author?

The finished product. I’ve written 24 books and had to self-publish the first 12, but since then have been attracting interest in publishers; and my last 12 books have been produced by established publishers -- the last in eBook and print format with Amazon.

7. Do you have any awards, or reviews or kudos you’d like to tell us about?

Yes, one of my historical novels won a prize for the best first chapter – Serendipity by Mike Lord – based on the escape after 20 years from house arrest in Ceylon in 1679 by Robert Knox and two associates. I added a factious character to accompany them.

I also have some excellent 5-Star reviews at Amazon.co.uk and Nook Books, which unfortunately are not reflected by Amazon.com.

8. How do promote your books and your author brand?

The recognized published have their own promotion and distribution systems, but I like to supplement this with Tweets and FB [Facebook] advertisements; and from time to time I make price reduction offers. I am lucky in that I have attracted several followers who retweet my Tweets.

Candidly I do not like offering FREE books as I have found that some retailers will take advantage and buy for free large quantities, which I presume they then offer for sale to their readers.

My own author brand is very important. I have invented hash tag #LoveAdam which I include in most of my Tweets and FB entries.

9. What is your next project?

Dreaming is my most recent project and will be published in January, but I have been toying with a murder mystery, which will be called Chocolates and Cyanide and which I hope will also be published during 2016.

10. Do you have a bit of wisdom you’d like to impart, or a favorite quote?

Yes, I collect quotations from famous authors, and many of them are observations that writers like me could well observe. Their overall gist is: never give up, never stop writing and never stop striving to get your works published and sold to readers.
