The James Gang

THE JAMES GANG

February James Gang Interview

Every month since 2006, I have interviewed authors or publishing insiders who have some form of “James” in their names or in their books. This month marks the last of the James Gang interviews, because I’m launching an updated website in March, featuring a “Go Pets!” blog. So for this last James Gang, I’m interviewing myself, Marcia James, about some of the exciting things I have planned for 2018!

1.
Why pick James as your pen name?

I always start the interviews with this question, and my answer is: I picked Marcia James as my pen name by having it begin with my real first name (Marcia) and end with my husband’s first name (James). It was a way of honoring his contributions to my life and my career.

2. What types of romances do you write, and what are you working on right now?

I write hot, humorous contemporary romances featuring heroines you can root for, heroes to die for, and funny dogs. This year, I’m finishing two manuscripts: Southern Exposure and My Kind of Trouble.

Southern Exposure is a full-length novel that should release this summer. Here’s the blurb:

The bare facts…
Who’s playing nasty practical jokes on the rich and famous at Eden Bay, the notorious clothing-optional Caribbean resort?  Wanting out of her dead-end job, New Jersey tabloid reporter Piper Loring goes undercover to investigate. The chance to write for a respected newspaper is worth risking sunburn on previously unexposed body parts. But can she stay focused on the job when faced with a sexy mystery man?

The naked truth…
Miami private investigator Jack Kendall is hired to catch the Eden Bay Prankster. The pay’s great, but would Sam Spade wear a thong bathing suit? First on Jack’s list of suspects is the shy, intriguing blonde whose odd behavior marks her as a nude resort novice. Jack sticks to Piper like a sweaty thigh to a beach chair, but soon discovers his inability to carry a concealed weapon is the least of his worries.

Southern Exposure, where mystery and romance are hotter than the tropics!

My Kind of Trouble is the 5th novella in the Klein’s K-9s Service Dogs series. It’s a second-chance-at-love Christmas romance, in which the relationship of the hero and heroine is helped and hindered by a troublesome black lab named Treble.

3. Tell us about your soon-to-be-launched “Go Pets!” blog.

When my new website debuts in March, the James Gang interviews will be gone, and in their place will be my “Go Pets!” blog. I’ll be interviewing authors who feature pets in their books – with an emphasis on rescue pets. Readers can comment and share photos of their pets. Once a month, I’ll randomly choose one of the reader’s pets to be featured in my newsletter and on my social media pages. I’m excited to connect with other animal lovers through this blog and learn about authors who are as pro-pet as I am.

4. Do you have a core story or theme in your books?

All of my books are pro-animal, primarily rescue pets – from dogs and cats to parrots and pot-bellied pigs. The heroes and heroines in my books reflect my beliefs in neutering/spaying and adopting vs. shopping for a pet.

My first book, At Her Command, included a tiny Chinese crested hairless dog named Smokey, who worked for the DEA. A caricature of Smokey became my author logo, and I’ve had a “crestie” dog in my books ever since.

5. Do you have any awards, kudos, etc you’d like to tell us about?

I finaled in or won eleven Romance Writers of America contests before selling my first book. Since then, I’ve received a number of great reviews from romance blogs and readers. Here’s one of my favorites:

“I’m impressed because her story is great [and] because she made me like cresties. If you’ve ever seen the ugliest dog contest pictures, you’d know why that’s surprising.” -- The Good, the Bad, & the Unread Reviews

One of my stories made it into the top 100 paid fiction books list on Amazon and Barnes & Noble – becoming both a U.S. and international bestseller.

6. Do you have a favorite quote?

I’ve always liked the following quote because it’s so important for women, in particular, to stand up for themselves against the negativity in the world: “No one can make you feel inferior without your consent.” – Eleanor Roosevelt
