The James Gang

THE JAMES GANG

December James Gang Interview

Each month, I interview authors or publishing insiders who have some form of “James” in their names or in their books. My December interviewee is author Kathryn Jane, who has a character named “James” in her latest book!

1. Let’s get the most important question asked first: Why James? That is, why did you pick that name for your hero?

Oh boy, confession time. James showed up named. Honest. When he appeared in previous books, he was pretty much off-screen as Julia’s missing husband and even she was little more than a secondary character. I didn’t really like the sound of Julia and James as a couple, but they were such unimportant characters, I let it slide. Little did I know, James was going to make his presence felt in future books, and eventually, he’d demand to be center stage in a book of his own: Dance With Me.

Dance With Me (with James and Julia), is a romantic suspense, a standalone, but also book 8 of the Intrepid Women series. When PTSD drove James away from his family, Julia took the reins of the family’s security business and became comfortable at the helm. So much so that when James is ready to return (fourteen years later), the transition has some bumpy moments. But reconciliation becomes secondary to the fight to save lives threatened by a rogue agent or two. This is a page-turner with some aha moments combined with the sweetness of love and the hilarity of a couple in who know each other very, very well.

2. What fiction genre(s) and/or sub-genre(s) do you write?

Romantic Suspense, Women’s Fiction, and I also write short stories about feral cats. (I call them heartwarming furry tales).

3. Tell us about your latest release.

Into the Sunrise is a women’s fiction with a very strong love story. Dusty had fought long and hard for success as a jockey, a woman in a man’s world, and comes home to her father’s ranch for a short stay, which becomes a huge turning point in her life. Not only does she reconnect with a man from her past, but over the next months she makes so many discoveries about herself her world is turned upside down. Sheer guts and determination get Dusty through the worst of times, and she learns exactly what she’s made of (in more ways than she could have ever imagined. Eventually, Dusty finds her way to a beautiful happy ending that leaves readers smiling for days.

4. Is there a core story and/or a theme(s) in your books?

Redemption, discovery, second chances, and rising above one’s heritage.

5. Do you have a favorite hero and/or heroine in your books and why?

Grace, of the Intrepid Women series is a recurring character who shows up when least expected and always makes me smile! She’s so gutsy, and down to earth, and she has such an incredible connection with the love of her life that it makes my heart sigh.

6. What do you enjoy most about being an author?

Writing stories, meeting new characters, happy endings, and hearing from readers.

7. Do you have any awards, reviews or kudos you’d like to tell us about?

I’m embarrassed to say I don’t save this kind of thing. At first I had a file I put the good stuff in, but then it felt like I was feeding my ego if I went back and read them, so I stopped. (Bad marketing practice, but oh well!)

I do very clearly remember one email though because it touched my heart. A lady wrote to tell me that she had read my first two volumes of short stories (CATS), but when she received her order of the third book, she tucked it away to read when she really needed a lift…and that time came thanks to hurricane Erma. She said that while hunkered down, hoping the roof wouldn’t be torn from her home, she read my stories and they got her through the worst day of her life.

THAT. That is why I publish my books. To make a difference in someone else’s life, even for a few minutes of distraction or the good feeling that comes with a happy ending.

8. How do you promote your books and your author brand?

Poorly. I’m not a salesman. I don’t easily talk about my work, and I feel bad posting a bunch of ads on social media.

9. What is your next project?

My second women’s fiction, and the next book in the Intrepid Women series, are crossing paths right now and just might end up between the same covers. So it will be a romantic suspense with a woman’s journey as the backbone of the story.

10. Do you have a bit of wisdom you’d like to impart or a favorite quote?

I believe Kindness will one day change the world.
